Ask an Expert
- Education
- This category is for sites specializing in free educational advice. Sites selling advice or help or services should be sent to Reference/Education/Products_and_Services/ or Reference/Ask_an_Expert/For_A_Fee . The category is NOT for Homework Help sites or sites that have more advice topics than just education. Sites which give advice on multiple topics or on non-education topics are best placed in Society/Advice .
- For a Fee
- General
- Asking an expert means asking a HUMAN a question, not a search engine or a well-programmed computer. Second, this category is for FREE answers to questions which can be asked and answered over the Internet. Answers for a fee would be a business and those sites should probably be in a business category or perhaps Reference/Education/Services_For_Hire/ or one of its subcategories. Third, there is a fine line between sites which give advice and those which provide 'ask an expert' services. Society/Advice may be the more appropriate place for a submission, and sometimes it will be moved over there rather than be posted in this category. Fourth, everyone is an expert on SOMETHING. This DOES NOT mean that your web site qualifies to be in this category. For example, if you submit your plumbing business web site under the guise of "We're the plumbing experts!", it will be deleted and possibly marked as a category spammer. You don't want that. We ONLY want web sites where you can submit questions to a pool of experts and have them supply an answer.
- Home Repair
- Homework Help
- The sites in this category are intended for students ages 13 and up. They are designed to help students with homework questions and problems.
- Libraries
- This category contains sites that allow you to query librarians.
- Medicine and Health
- Recreation
- Science and Technology
- Writing
- 1. Definitions: "Ask" means a user defined question, not a question selected from a pre-programmed list. "Expert" means a qualified human being. "Writing" is defined as the written use of the English language, including technical and creative aspects. Any human being whose qualifications are clearly posted and available for review by the site user shall be considered a "qualified" expert. Therefore, sites listed in this category should allow all site users to ask their own questions regarding the written use of the English language of a qualified human expert. 2. This category is for free answers to questions. Sites that do not provide any free services should be listed elsewhere. Sites that provide limited free services are acceptable. 3. This category is a very specific subcategory of the Reference: Ask an Expert list. Sites that include a broad range of subjects should be listed in the larger category. Note that any rules or restrictions governing the larger category shall also apply to this subcategory.

Education
- Alumni Directories
- Alumni sites for every school in America and many schools throughout the world can be found in these comprehensive alumni directories. Most have free registration and search features but some require a subscription fee for use.
- Colleges and Universities
- Here you will find educational institutions at the tertiary level and beyond. Each college and university resides in its own subcategory. Further subcategorization can be done using the following template. This template was developed with US schools in mind, but can and should be modified for schools outside the United States. Colleges and Universities Official Template Unless an official site is the only site in the main category for a school or in one of the subcats, it can be cooled. Generally, the TOP cat for the college/university should contain the Main site for the college/university. Other general information sites, such as directories, can be listed at the top when appropriate. The rest should be categorized in the following categories: Admissions - Includes information about and for prospective students. This category would also house all of the deep links about the university from informative sites such as www.review.com and US News and World Report. Administration - Covers offices and support areas for colleges and universities, as well as general administrative offices. Alumni - Includes resources specifically directed at alumni. A further category named "Regional" may be established for sites that cater to alumni in specific regions. Athletics - The official university athletic site should be listed. @ links to school-sponsored athletics and sport teams which reside in Sports/College_and_University/ should be placed in the category. Unofficial sports clubs (i.e., teams that are NOT officially sanctioned by the athletic department) DO NOT belong in this cat. They should be moved to Student Organizations. Campuses - Departments and Programs - Subcats need to be created for all individual schools and colleges. The listings for each department should be found under the college or school it is affiliated with. If any college or school has pages for individual programs please create an individual Programs subcat (if this is confusing please see Reference/Education/Colleges_and_Universities/North_America/United_States/ New_Jersey/Princeton_University/Departments/ for an example). If a school has no such academic subdivisions, then all departmental listings should go directly under Departments and Programs, a separate Programs cat does need to be created though. Libraries and Museums - Covers all campus libraries and museums from individual academic libraries and museums to main branches. Organizations - Includes campus organizations and clubs - both student and otherwise. A Greek Life subcat should also be created (if necessary). All fraternities and sororities (if they exist) should be included in this category. Since many large institutions have more than 100 club sites it will be necessary to categorize them further. This can be accomplished in one of two ways: 1) Subdivide by the type of club (i.e Sports Clubs, A-Capella, Ethnic, etc.) This method is preferred. 2) Create an alphabar, and categorize the sites by the letter of their first name. Publications and Media - Includes campus publications as well as news and/or media about the institution. Research - Includes specific research efforts and/or studies. All Centers and Institutes should be placed in this cat.
- Directories
- Indexes and directories of web sites about education.
- Distance Learning
- Distance learning can be defined as the acquisition of knowledge and skills through mediated information and instruction. Distance learning encompasses all technologies and supports the pursuit of life long learning for all. Providing courses and electronic field trips are among the principal applications for distance learning in Pre-K through grade 12 education. Distance learning is also used to support rural and inner city classes with student enrichment, student courses, staff development and in-service training for teachers and administrators. Further, distance learning is used to share classes among schools for those areas who may not be able to find good teachers to teach honors courses like math and science. Distance learning provides a way to share those types of classes and employ one instructor. In higher education, distance learning is providing undergraduate and advanced degrees to students in offices, at community colleges and at various receive sites. Students for whom convenience may be a crucial factor in receiving college credit are earning degrees by interactive instructional television, ITFS and other means of delivery. These students may be place-bound or time-bound and this type of instruction provides access to all who wish to pursue a degree. In the corporate side of training, America is currently faced with upgrading the training of 50 million American workers. Each year corporations look to the use of technology and distance education to provide that training and continuing education for their workers. This saves them millions of dollars each year using distance learning to train employees more effectively and more efficiently than with conventional methods. Programming for distance learning provides the receiver many options both in technical configurations and content design. Educational materials are delivered primarily through live and interactive classes. Today's technology offers many options for delivering and receiving education over a distance. The ability of the teacher and students to see each other may not be a necessary condition for effective distance learning, but audio is a critical component for interactivity. Teaching strategies based on computer applications are emerging that are also effective. Distance learning provides equity of access to information and opportunities, and can dramatically decrease the costs and inconveniences associated with maintaining a well-trained work force. Telecommunications systems that serve education can also benefit the community at large. In rural areas, especially, telecommunications systems and services are tied increasingly to economic development and community survival. New uses for distance learning include the application of information and educational resources for Pre-K through grade 12 students, adults, senior citizens, local governments, organizations and businesses. (credit: www.azdla.org ) It should be noted that quality of distance learning programs varies widely, and there are hucksters out there selling worthless, unaccredited degrees and programs, sometimes passing them off as legitimate to unwary learners; buyer beware!

Sites listed in this category may also provide classroom tips or teaching ideas related to a variety of subject areas. The search results will serve up listings of different categories. Go to those categories and see if one of them is right for you. You may have to do a few searches using different keywords that relate to your site. Also, it is possible your site could more appropriately be placed under some other top level directory category such as Science or Society . Please find the closest related subcategory. It should be noted that the top level categories that are listed are very broad and also contain second, third, and sometimes fourth, fifth, and more levels of categories that may relate more closely to what you need for your listing. Make sure you have dug down deeply enough in the directory structure before you make a suggestion. If you list in the upper level categories, your listing could be moved to a lower level category or removed if not relevant. Thank you for your cooperation. --- As a "last" resort "after" you have exhausted all other methods --- If a related subcategory doesn't exist, you may contact one of the upper level editors and provide a suggestion. One of the editors will review your request. If it is truly not available, we will add the category and you can submit your URL to it. Note: You should not submit to the upper level categories.

Knowledge Management
- Business and Companies
- Knowledge Management is the science of storing, indexing, and retrieving information to add value to an organization. It focuses on creating a "repository" of collective knowledge, intellectual capital, skills, and experience. KM is usually focused around developing processes and systems to help people in an organization answer questions such as: Who in our organization knows something about ____? What have we done in the field of ______? Where can I find information related to the ______ product or service? Who should I turn to for help on _______? Knowledge management focuses on leveraging an organization's collective knowledge and experience to improve performance; the focus in on processes such as strategic planning, problem solving, learning, and decision making. It also protects intellectual assets from decay, adds to firm intelligence and provides increased flexibility. There are a number of companies which provide consulting services, software products, or other services in the area of Knowledge Management. These range from specialized firms which focus solely on KM to large information technology companies which have specialized resources in KM.

- General
- Knowledge Management is a discipline that examines information and human understanding, using concepts from education, information technology, cognitive psychology and library science. It is also a strategy aimed at turning an organization's intellectual assets, both recorded information and the talents of its members, into greater productivity, new value, and increased competitiveness. It provides a powerful way of looking at how society organizes itself and uses its intellectual resources and promises a means of humanizing our approach to modern technology, putting the understanding of human intellect and motivation at the center.
- Information Architecture
- Information architecture is the process of defining, organizing, and developing navigation systems that helps people manage information more successfully.
- Information Assets
- Like individuals, businesses and other organizations remember and forget what they know. Organizational memory consists of what knowledge a business has recorded and can recall as needed, combined with the knowledge and experience in the collective minds of its current employees. This knowledge, although it is difficult to quantify, is a valuable asset to the business and must be managed with the same diligence as other assets.
- Information Overload
- As the world enters the Knowledge Age, information on virtually every aspect of our lives and businesses is becoming available at an increasing rate. When the availability of information outstrips the time and energy of those who could potentially use it, frustration can result. This condition is often referred to as information overload or infoglut. Left unresolved, this can lead to inefficiency at best, job burnout at worst.
- Knowledge Creation
- Knowledge involves the transformation of information into capabilities for effective action. This can only be done through human understanding. The human mind can create unique connections between seemingly unrelated information to come up with breakthrough ideas, but to do this, the mind must be trained to see beyond the obvious.
- Knowledge Discovery
- As the volume of information surges, it becomes increasingly difficult to rescue interesting and thought-provoking concepts from among the undifferentiated flood of words and images. The use of automated methods and tools to encourage and/or confirm new ideas by analyzing bulk information can help individuals and organizations to uncover heretofore unsuspected patterns and connections.
- Knowledge Flow
- Knowledge Representation
- Knowledge representation covers techniques for representing and storing knowledge in a way that is usable by a machine, for instance, programming languages specifically formulated for working with knowledge (knowledge representation languages), and databases for storing facts about the world.
- Knowledge Retrieval
- Storing and recalling explicit information has come a long way from the handwritten indexes, card catalogs and other manual devices of a less information-dependent age., but our journey has only begun.
- Organizations
- This category is for sites produced by organizations whose primary function involves Knowledge Management. Knowledge Management is the field that examines how knowledge, whether public of private might be captured, represented, stored and applied for a range of knowledge intensive tasks whether that be decision support, computer assisted learning, research (for example, hypothesis testing) or research support.
- Publications
- Books, journals, magazines and E-zines related to the field of Knowledge Management.
- Software
- Knowledge management has a wide variety of aspects, most of which are implemented via some sort of technology. Numerous companies have set up suites of interacting tools to cover a wide range of KM functions. This category was originally devised to hold websites that deal with these interacting, mostly large suites of tools. Cross references have since been set up to link software & tools that relate to single or limited aspects of KM which are listed under that purpose.
